Patterns of Buffer Overflow in a Class of Queues with Long Memory in the Input Stream

چکیده
We study the time it takes until a a uid queue with a nite, but large, holding capacity reaches the overrow point. The queue is fed by an on/oo process, with a heavy tailed on distribution, which is known to have long memory. It turns out that the expected time until overrow, as a function of capacity L, increases only polynomially fast, and so overrows happen much more often than in the \classical" light tailed case, where the expected overrow time increases as an exponential function of L. Moreover, we show that in the heavy tailed case, overrows are basically caused by single huge jobs. An implication is that the usual GI=G=1 queue with nite but large holding capacity and heavy tailed service times, will overrow about equally often no matter how much we increase the service rate. We also study the time until overrow for queues fed by a superposition of k iid. on/oo processes with a heavy tailed on distribution, and show the beneet of pooling the system resources as far as time until overrow is concerned.

A Poisson Limit for Buffer Overflow Probabilities
A key criterion in the design of high-speed networks is the probability that the buffer content exceeds a given threshold. We consider n independent identical traffic sources modelled as point processes, which are fed into a link with speed proportional to n. Under fairly general assumptions on the input processes we show that the steady state probability of the buffer content exceeding a thres...
متن کاملStream ciphers and the eSTREAM project
Stream ciphers are an important class of symmetric cryptographic algorithms. The eSTREAM project contributed significantly to the recent increase of activity in this field. In this paper, we present a survey of the eSTREAM project. We also review recent time/memory/data and time/memory/key trade-offs relevant for the generic attacks on stream ciphers.
متن کاملOn the estimation of buffer overflow probabilities from measurements
We propose estimators of the buffer overflow probability in queues fed by a Markov-modulated input process and serviced by an autocorrelated service process. These estimators are based on large-deviations asymptotics for the overflow probability. We demonstrate that the proposed estimators are less likely to underestimate the overflow probability than the estimator obtained by certainty equival...
متن کاملBuffer overflow management with class segregation
We consider a new model for buffer management of network switches with Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. A stream of packets, each attributed with a value representing its Class of Service (CoS), arrives over time at a network switch and demands a further transmission. The switch is equipped with multiple queues of limited capacities, where each queue stores packets of one value only. The ...
متن کاملA Novel Fuzzy Based Method for Heart Rate Variability Prediction
Abstract In this paper, a novel technique based on fuzzy method is presented for chaotic nonlinear time series prediction. Fuzzy approach with the gradient learning algorithm and methods constitutes the main components of this method. This learning process in this method is similar to conventional gradient descent learning process, except that the input patterns and parameters are stored in mem...
